INTERVISTA a ENFENETEE (01-03-2005)

Ciobin: A little history of Enfenetee

ENFENETEE: A little her-story about ENFENETEE. I have always loved all kinds of music and when I heard rap I was blown away. Rap music is a genre that you are free to express whatever you feel and I enjoy freedom. My persona of ENFENETEE has been brewing all my life through experiences. ENFENETEE is a product of all the things that I have gone through. The games men play and the unnecessary games people play in general. I decided I was not going to take it anymore so I embraced the dominant side of my personality. It felt good to me, it was natural, so that is how I came to be. I want women to know that they don’t have to be submissive just because they are women. They can rise up and take control and I am just the one to show them how. I am “THE DOMINATRIX”.

Ciobin: Is this your first cd?

ENFENETEE: No, This is my second cd. The first cd was Hate The Game EP. We got such a huge response from Hate The Game EP, that it spawned into the Hate The Game Maxi Single. Women from around the globe have called Hate The Game the New Female Anthem.

Ciobin: Tell me something about hip-hop in your city.

ENFENETEE: Baltimore has a untapped pool of rap artists. Hip-hop in Baltimore brings together people from all races, economic backgrounds and lifestyles. It’s one of the few things that can achieve that task in Baltimore. On the down side though, there is not a lot of support mechanisms set in place to help the advancement of Independent Record companies or artist.

Ciobin: Do you know something about hip-hop in Italy?

ENFENETEE: Yes, I know that hip-hop in Italy started from the same idea as it did here in The States. Total dissatisfaction brings about change. In Italy it began with the Cantastoria tradition of improvised poetry battles. While you were rapping Fight The Feud we had Chuck D. here rapping about Fight the Power. You wanted to fight the mafia, we wanted to fight the government.

Ciobin: What do you think about mp3?

ENFENETEE: MP3 format music files are wonderful because it is the ideal medium for accessing legal music files over the internet without the extensive download times involved with WAV/AIFF files.MP3's are the ideal medium for the up-and-coming and Indie artist to display their talents and get their music noticed by placing singles and albums on the internet for free or a small fee for immediate download.

Ciobin: And about women in hip-hop?

ENFENETEE: Women in hip-hop are some of the strongest women on the planet earth. Music is a male dominated field. Women have to get past so many stereotypes before we are taken seriously and once we are, we are then considered bitches most of the time. When women use their sexuality they are branded as whores. Men use their masculinity and sexuality all the time to sell there records, they prance around flexing muscles with no shirts on. While women in hip-hop are victims of a terrible double standard.

Ciobin: Have you performed live?

ENFENETEE: Yes, I have performed live. In fact, the most memorable performance I had was this past June. I performed at Baltimore’s Pride Festival and prior to me going on stage the crowd was not receptive at all. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. The mics were wired and I was featuring a new R&B group from Baltimore called MOR. So it was four of us on stage with big cables plus two dancers. Not to mention once the performance started my mic quickly went dead. So I just belted out my rhymes anyway, hopped over cables and did the damn thing. The crowd went wild and even threw money on the stage. Performing live is the best.

Ciobin: Who is the artist you like most and why?

ENFENETEE: The artist I like the most is Pink. Pink really has a love for the music. She started off with an image that she really didn’t like but hung in there. Now she has proven herself musically and she can be the person that she wants to be. She had to play the game in order to be true to herself. Plus I agree with her philosophy, “Let Women Rule The World”. The way the world is going I think women could make it a better place.

Ciobin: Do you think that hip-hop videos represent the real hip-hop?

ENFENETEE: No, I don’t think hip-hop videos represent real hip-hop because the things in videos are just an illusion. Videos are purely for entertainment. Most of the jewelry, cars, houses and models are rented. Hip-hop is a way of life, the lifestyle of most people in the inner city. When you sell drugs and get shot in a video you don’t die. When you do it in real life you either go to jail or you are pushing up daisies. Plus in videos most women are treated like a piece of meat, in real life everybody knows the women are the “Masters Of The Game".

Ciobin: In what way you live hip-hop?

ENFENETEE: Hip-hop is my life. Everyday is a struggle to fight prejudice, stereotypes and at the same time give hope and purpose to the next generation of hip-hop. I open myself up to share experiences so that others will not make the same mistakes. By doing this, the culture of hip-hop will be uplifted. Remember, I said uplifted not accepted.

Ciobin: Tell me something about clubs and radios in your city.

ENFENETEE: Well, we only have one radio station in Baltimore that plays hip hop. Need I say more. There is no dominant type of clubs here as far as music. What ever type of mood you are in, there is a club here for you.

Ciobin: Future projects

ENFENETEE: Where is my crystal ball? Firt, is to finish my new album "THE DOMINATRIX" slated for release in late August, 2004. Also, I am already doing print modeling so I am going to try my hand at the runway soon. Also I will be writing and producing for some other artists in Baltimore. There are a few video projects in the wings and I am slotted to co-host another cable TV show. Plus eventually I plan to get eight full hours of sleep.
